A pergola or gazebo is the difference between a yard you look at and one you sit in. It is also a structure with a roof, in a province with real wind and real snow, which means it needs to be built like one.
Footings, Again
Same principle as a deck. Posts carrying a roof structure need footings that reach frost depth, because frost that lifts one post and not another racks the whole frame out of square.
This is where most kit structures come up short. They are typically designed to bolt to an existing slab or sit on shallow anchors, which is adequate in a mild climate and sheltered yard. Prairie wind on a solid gazebo roof generates genuine uplift, and Manitoba snow sitting on that roof generates genuine downward load. Neither is what a surface anchor was designed for.
Pergola or Gazebo
A pergola has an open slatted roof. It defines a space, gives filtered shade, and works well over a patio or a section of deck. It does not keep rain off, and it does not carry snow, which makes it the lighter and less expensive build.
A gazebo has a solid roof. It gives real shelter, which extends how much of the season the space is usable, and it can take a snow load. It is the more substantial structure in every sense, including cost.
If you want shade, a pergola. If you want to sit outside in the rain, a gazebo.
Attached or Freestanding
Attached to the house or over a deck, a structure gets some support from the building and reads as an extension of it. It also means flashing and attachment details that have to be right, because a bad connection to the house is a water problem.
Freestanding gives you more freedom about where it goes, which matters if the best spot in your yard is not against the back wall.

The cheapest time to put a pergola over a patio is while the patio is being built, because the footings can go in before the pavers rather than through them afterwards.

Why not just buy a kit from a big-box store?
