Clay holds water. It swells when it takes moisture on and shrinks as it dries, and it moves again every time the ground freezes. That is why yards here develop low spots, why water ends up against foundations, and why a lawn can be healthy in one corner and drowned in another.
We start by reading the grade across the whole property, not just the area you are asking about. Where the fall is wrong we correct it. Where water has nowhere to go we give it somewhere to go. Only then does anything get built or planted on top.

Landscaping Questions
When is the landscaping season in Manitoba?
Roughly May through September, depending on when the ground thaws and dries enough to work. Sod and planting do best outside the peak heat of midsummer, and the fall stretch is often the most reliable window for grading and site work. The season is short, so the calendar fills earlier than people expect.
Do I need to fix the grading, or can I just lay sod?
If water is pooling or running toward the house, sod on top of the problem just hides it for a season. Grading is what decides where water goes, and on Red River Valley clay the water does not soak away quickly. We look at the grade before quoting anything that sits on top of it.
What does a full yard transformation involve?
Usually excavation and grading first, then drainage correction, then the hard surfaces such as patio, walkway and retaining walls, then sod, topsoil and planting last. Doing it in that order means nothing finished gets driven over or dug up again.
Can you work with the grading plan on a new-build lot?
Yes, and it matters. New subdivisions hand over with the lot graded to a drainage plan the developer and the City have already approved. Anything we build has to keep that drainage working, so we start by understanding the plan rather than cutting across it.
