Compact Equipment, Residential Access
Most of our work is on lots where a full-size excavator is not getting anywhere near the back yard. We run compact track loaders that fit through standard residential gates.
That matters more than it sounds. The difference between machine access and no machine access on a back-yard project is frequently days of labour, because without it every cubic metre of clay comes out by wheelbarrow and every cubic metre of gravel goes back the same way.
At the site visit we work out what can actually get in. If the honest answer is nothing, you will hear that then rather than after the quote.
Clay Is Heavy, and There Is a Lot of It
Excavated clay has to go somewhere, and hauling it is a genuine line item rather than an afterthought. A patio base excavation produces a surprising volume of spoil, and clay weighs considerably more than the sandy soil most estimating rules of thumb assume.
Where it makes sense we reuse spoil on the same property for grading or fill, which saves the haul. Where it does not, it gets taken away and the site gets left clean.
Locates Before Any Digging
Utility locates are arranged before anything is dug, every time. They are free, they take a few days, and they are the reason excavation is booked rather than squeezed in.
Combine the Digging
If your property needs several things dug in a season, doing them in one mobilisation is substantially cheaper than three separate visits. Getting the machine there is most of the fixed cost.
If you are planning a patio this year and a fence next year, it is worth asking whether the post holes are better done now.

Will your equipment fit through my side gate?
Usually. We run compact track loaders that get through most residential gates, which is the difference between machine work and a week of wheelbarrows. If the access genuinely will not take a machine we will tell you at the site visit, because it changes the price substantially and you should know before you commit.
What happens to the dirt you dig out?
It gets hauled away, and that is a real cost worth asking any contractor about. Clay is heavy and there is usually more of it than people expect. Occasionally spoil can be reused on the same property for grading, which saves a haul.
Do you call for utility locates?
Yes, before anything gets dug. Locates are free, they take a few days to arrange, and hitting a buried line is the kind of mistake that is dangerous as well as expensive. It is one of the reasons excavation cannot be booked for tomorrow.
Why does excavation cost so much on a small job?
Because getting the machine to the property costs roughly the same whether it digs for two hours or two days. That fixed cost spread across a small job looks expensive per square foot. If you have several things that need digging, doing them in one visit is meaningfully cheaper than three separate ones.
