Materials
Pressure-treated is the affordable, proven option and still the most common choice. It needs cleaning and re-sealing on a cycle to stay looking right.
Cedar is naturally more resistant, ages well, and has a look that treated lumber does not. It costs more and still benefits from maintenance.
Composite and PVC are the low-maintenance options. They do not splinter, they hold colour, and they handle the freeze-thaw cycling here without the annual upkeep. The trade is a higher up-front cost.
Vinyl and Duradek membrane surfaces are the answer when the space under the deck has to stay dry, which matters on elevated decks and over usable space below.
