Small enclosed yards. On a compact lot, the fixed costs of lawn care do not scale down. Turf removes the mower, the watering and the reseeding from a space too small to enjoy them.
Dog runs and high-traffic areas. Grass that gets walked on the same way every day stops being grass. Turf does not care.
Poolside and around hardscape. No mud, no clippings tracked across the patio, and a clean edge against pavers.
Where We Would Talk You Out of It
A large, open, sunny yard where grass grows well. If sod will thrive, sod is cheaper, cooler underfoot in July, and easier to change your mind about later.

The Base Is Still the Job
Turf is a surface, and like any surface here it is only as good as what is under it.
The base has to be excavated, free-draining and compacted. Water needs somewhere to go, because on Red River Valley clay it has nowhere to go naturally. A base that traps water will heave in the freeze-thaw cycle exactly the way a badly built patio does, and turf over a heaved base ripples and develops soft spots.
Edges have to be properly secured too, because the failure mode for turf is lifting at a corner, and that is a fixing question rather than a material one.
Through Winnipeg Winters
Synthetic turf handles the climate without difficulty. It freezes, it thaws, and it comes back in spring unchanged, which is more than can be said for a lot of real lawns after a hard winter.
Snow can be cleared off it. Shovelling and brushing are fine, and the things to avoid are a metal blade scraping the fibres directly and aggressive ice-melt chemicals.
Cost, Honestly
Turf costs more to install than sod, usually by a substantial margin. It costs less every year afterwards, because there is no watering, mowing, fertilising or reseeding.
Whether that adds up depends on how long you are staying and what you currently spend keeping a lawn alive. For the right spot it is clearly worth it. For the wrong one it is an expensive way to solve a problem you did not have.
