Selkirk sits on the Red River about 30 kilometres downstream of Winnipeg, and it has a genuinely different character from the city subdivisions. The lots tend to be larger, a lot of the housing stock is older, and the river is a real factor rather than a distant feature.

We are based in the RM of St. Andrews, immediately south of Selkirk, which makes it one of the closest markets we work in.

Older Stock, Bigger Lots

Selkirk grew as an industrial and river town. It was a fish export centre, supported by an ammonia refrigeration plant built in 1911 and reported at the time as the largest in Canada, and Manitoba Steel Foundries opened here in 1916 producing railway castings.

That history shows up in the housing. A good share of Selkirk’s residential stock dates from the early bungalow era through the mid-century expansion, which means yards that were landscaped decades ago and decks and fences well past their service life. The generous lot sizes are an advantage, because there is room to do something substantial rather than fitting a patio into a gap.

The River Changes the Build

The Red runs through the middle of this. Properties closer to the river deal with a higher water table, ground that stays soft later into the spring, and in places a bank slope that has to be respected rather than built over.

Selkirk also sits downstream of the Red River Floodway outlet, which returns diverted water to the river near Lockport, just south of here. None of that changes what we build, but it does change how we approach footing depth, drainage direction and where a retaining wall makes sense.

Cold That Is Worth Designing For

Selkirk has recorded a low of −45.6 °C, set on 26 February 1966, against a high of 38.5 °C in June 1995. That is an enormous annual range, and it is the reason we take deck footings to frost depth and set fence posts a minimum of four feet down.

A fence built to a milder standard will heave here. It is not a question of whether.

It is one of our closest markets. We are based in the RM of St. Andrews, directly between Selkirk and Winnipeg, so Selkirk is a shorter run for us than most of south Winnipeg. That matters for snow removal in particular, where distance decides what is practical.

Does being near the river change how you build?

On the riverside lots, yes. Proximity to the Red brings a higher water table, softer ground in spring and bank slope to account for. Footing depth, drainage and where a retaining wall goes all need to reflect that rather than being copied from a standard suburban lot.

Our house is from the 1960s and the yard has never been touched. Where do we start?

With the grade and the drainage. On a yard that has been left alone for decades, the soil has usually settled away from the house and the original drainage has stopped working. That is worth fixing before anything gets built or planted on top of it.

Do you take snow removal contracts in Selkirk?
